They may look like simple barcodes, but they serve completely different purposes.

What Is an FNSKU Label?
FNSKU stands for Fulfilment Network Stock Keeping Unit.
It is an Amazon-specific identifier used to identify inventory inside Amazon’s fulfilment network.
For products that require an FNSKU label, the label is normally applied to each individual sellable unit before the inventory is sent to Amazon FBA.
For example, if you are sending 100 units of one product, and that product requires Amazon barcode labelling, each of those 100 units needs the appropriate FNSKU barcode.
Why Is the FNSKU Important?
Once your inventory reaches Amazon’s fulfilment network, Amazon needs to identify the product correctly.
The FNSKU helps connect the physical unit with the corresponding Amazon inventory.
A correctly prepared FNSKU label therefore helps Amazon identify:
- The product
- The specific FBA inventory
- The relevant seller/inventory information within Amazon’s system
This is why sellers should not treat FNSKU labelling as simply putting another sticker on the product.
Where Should an FNSKU Label Be Placed?
- Clearly visible
- Flat and readable
- Easy for a scanner to access
- Applied to the correct sellable unit
- Positioned so that conflicting scannable product barcodes are handled according to Amazon’s current labelling requirements
Labels should not normally be folded around corners, damaged, covered by tape in a way that affects scanning, or placed where the barcode cannot be read properly.
If a product is packed inside a polybag, bundled, or otherwise prepared as one sellable unit, the final packaging and barcode placement must allow Amazon to identify that unit correctly.
What Is an Amazon FBA Box Label?
The box label is different from the FNSKU label.
The FNSKU identifies an individual sellable unit.
The Amazon shipment box label identifies the carton being sent as part of your FBA shipment.
When a seller creates an FBA shipment in Amazon Seller Central, Amazon generates the required shipment labels for the cartons included in that shipment.
These labels are printed and attached to the relevant outer cartons before dispatch.
FNSKU Label vs Box Label
The easiest way to understand the difference is:
FNSKU Label → Product Level
Amazon Box Label → Carton/Shipment Level
Imagine you are sending 200 units packed inside 10 cartons.
Depending on the product’s barcode and preparation requirements:
- Individual units may require FNSKU labels
- Each shipping carton will require the appropriate Amazon shipment/box label
So one label helps Amazon identify what the individual product is, while the other helps Amazon process the shipment carton.
Common FBA Labelling Mistakes
Some simple mistakes can create unnecessary problems during FBA preparation.
These include:
- Using the wrong FNSKU
- Putting an FNSKU on the wrong product
- Leaving conflicting barcodes scannable when they should not be
- Poor-quality or unreadable barcode printing
- Placing labels across an edge or corner
- Mixing shipment box labels between cartons
- Sending cartons without the required Amazon shipment labels
- Changing carton contents after shipment labels have already been prepared without checking the shipment plan
For international sellers, these mistakes can become particularly inconvenient because the seller may be thousands of kilometres away from the UAE inventory.
